Roadside assistance for my class C

My GSRA expired a few months ago. When I changed RV/Auto insurance over to Progressive, they included roadside assistance for $3. It has the usual locksmith, fuel if you run out, tire change and towing to the closest repair facility. My AAA has the for the MH, locksmith and fuel and for $37 per year I can add tire change and towing up to 100miles. They all use contracted service/repair/towing here in LA. One tow truck can service AAA, Allstate, Progressive, Mercury etc. What happens when I call from out of state? Seems like most of the complaints are from RV travelers trying to use the roadside service and getting the runaround with hours of delay, improper tool;s and equipment
I have a spare, jack, belt and hoses just in case..

  • I have never had an issue using AAA outside my region. Actually, I've only used AAA once inside my region. When we lived in NJ we needed a tow in PA and once in VA. We had no trouble being out of region. Since moving to GA we've used it in NJ and PA without issue. The one time in PA there was a small delay in relaying from my region to the region that covered where ever I was in PA, but the service was still the same.

I've read posts where people have had issues when out of region. From what I gather, there are parts of the US that have poor AAA coverage and when you are in those areas, that is when there are problems. We have been fortunate that we've never experienced that problem.

  • Middle of Kansas on a HOT day--Good Sam service was within 45 minutes--hardest part was talking to the guy at GS. His call to the service guy was quick though and the service was great! He was friendly, helpful, solved the problem--needed oil or it seemed to. And did NOT charge an arm and a leg for emergency service on the road. I think their network is larger than AAA based on the waiting period. Maybe I was just lucky. Had similar luck with a short tow in Mesa on our auto. I renewed even though our insurance says they have service. Didn't test them either though.
  • I think roadside assistance response time depends on where you are and how many contractted tow trucks are in the area and how busy they are. I am sure they aren't just sitting around waiting for your service call.
  • I had to use my Progressive Insurance provided roadside service one time. The folks at Progressive were great. The service provider was over committed and it took a long time (hours upon hours) for them to show up. Fortunately for us we were at a campsite and no one was scheduled to take it over.
  • I also carry road service with my insurance as a secondary plan. However, 25 or 30 years ago I never gave much thought and would jump out and change my own tire, except on CA freeways. Not so much any more. Plus I don't have a spare or lug wrench large enough to change a 22.5 inch tire. I agree being near LA tow trucks are more readily available.
