A professional of / at WHAT? There is no such thing as a "professional" roof replacer.

In narrow usage, not all expertise is considered a profession. Although sometimes referred to as professions, occupations such as skilled construction and maintenance work are more generally thought of as trades or crafts. The completion of an apprenticeship is generally associated with skilled labor or trades such as carpenter, electrician, mason, painter, plumber and other similar occupations. A related distinction would be that a professional does mainly mental work, as opposed to engaging in physical work.

So whereas you may have installed many ..??.. new roof coverings on RV/s you are by no means a professional

Thanks for sharing the details. We just returned from a month in Florida and will be returning for 3 months after the Christmas holiday. We left our motorhome in Florida and now with hindsight I could have left it with a roofer to be worked on while we are here in the north. Oh well.

Bill and Diana the base quote is $4400 including all the vents replaced, new caps on everything, 20 year warranty on the coating, 2 days to do it unless they have to do extra work when they peel old stuff off. We are also paying $400 for him to drive up here to do the job. He is located in Jensen Beach Fl. And is driving to Zephyrhills to do the job.

Thanks for sharing your final decision with us. Earlier in this thread I mention that like you, I'm also in the market for a new roof. What price did Mike quote? Did he specify how long the job would take? How soon will your job be done? After the job is completed would you be so kind to give another update on this thread? But for now, what price did Mike quote?

Decision made. I found a guy in Florida who will travel to our MH where we are storing it at the campground. Arranged with campground he can redo roof on the storage site. He gave us good info..will only replace the decking where needed and quote included replacing the vents. Using EPDM roof material. Company is Never Leak and Mike has been doing this for many years. We could have taken it to him as he is quite a bit from us but as we are heading north on Wednesday this worked out paying his mileage for him to come here and get it done while we are away.

Campground management have been very helpful in helping us with this. We are having him stay in the RV so we don't have to pay motel costs. Quote is less than the RV dealers and I feel better going with someone who only does roofs. Thanks for all the advice.

As Bruce mentioned, I have seen the trailer he restored. I did get the opportunity to inspect the trailer in detail including the roof.. Which is free of blemishes, bumps, wrinkles, crevices or any sort of distortion to a completely smooth surface.

In looking at the photos Bruce provided a link to of the restore process I am struck by the variance in the type of substrate that is on Bruce's trailer versus what is on other RV's.

While Bruce did not replace the entire substrate he did replace what was damaged. I am thinking he replaced the entire sheet if any portion was damaged.

As has already been pointed out there is a requirement for a smooth clean surface. In some instances it may be necessary to replace the entire substrate, or the most economical alternative.

What this boils down to is that for those that do not have the experience or knowledge or skill set to take on the task of replacing a roof covering then one has to rely on whom they chose to accomplice the repair.

As an aside we have had an instance where a manufacturer shipped a class A where the roof had not been sufficiently cleaned prior to the roof covering being applied it was laced with bumps and blemishes. The manufacturer after some persuasion brought the coach back to the factory and replaced the entire roof since whatever substrate they used could not be sufficiently cleaned and repaired.

Having seen many of the projects, and repairs that have come out of Bruce's shop his reference to him being an amateur is akin to Moby Dick referring to himself as a minnow.

I should add that the wholesale cost for EPDM roofing for a 10x40 roll that is .045 thick is around $325 and if you go all of the way up to the really thick .090 EPDM roof, which I've never seen on an RV, the cost is around $700.
The rest of the cost is for labor, glue, uncured rubber for flashings, etc.

Exactly. No wonder some RV shops get a bad name when they have PROFESSIONALS like that running the shop. I know our local guys peel off old rubber and install new all the time without a complete redecking - even on their own rental units.

Oh well, if someone want to over pay for a PROFESSIONAL to take their $$$ thats up to them.
