Roof Runoff

Our 2004 Fleetwood Southwind has a TPO roof that looks like it's in pretty good shape. However, whenever it rains the runoff from the roof leaves chalky white streaks down my windshield and the back of the coach. I assume that this is from the weathering of the rubber.

I know that the former owners used Heng's Rubber Roof Coating annually while they were using the RV, but it may have been a couple of years since the last application.

Is this chalking a problem? And if so, is another coat of Heng's the solution? Any other ideas?

  • Even though you may treat the roof, you may want to get a product I got for my same problem that acts like a rain gutter. Works great for my windshield but I still get streaks on the side glass. I think I got it at PPL but don't remember what they called it. Hope this helps. Arnold I looked it up. Called rv rain gutter. Sold by Amazon too.
  • Had the same problem with our 2004 Fleetwood Flair. I finally used Henry Dura-Brite White roof coating from Home Depot. One gallon did the job. No more streaks. Had the coach for two years after that and streaks didn't come back.
  • Heng's recommends cleaning the roof with Tide powder laundry detergent before applying their product. Wet the roof, sprinkle on some Tide and scrub with a brush. Rinse well and allow it to dry before applying the Heng's. No primer needed.

We coated our Southwind roof last summer, it still looks like the day it was applied.
I don't think it needs to be applied annually. That seems excessive.

clean the roof with soap water and a mop? what I'd do

Actually, I did that, and a soft scrub brush. Didn't seem to help.
