Roof top AC units

The roof AC units on my 06 Mountain Air gas motor home are losing there cooling capacity. Can they be recharged or do they need to be replaced

One more comment.. I have, over the years have 3.2 Different types of A/C's on this unit.

My Main Summer Service Person told me "Coleman's SUCK" everyone else BLOWS.
By that she meant a COLEMAN A/C unit sucks air IN via the condenser coil and exhausts it out the sides,, So when it comes time to clean you remove the outer shroud (4 bolts and lift it off) and then you peal the cotton wood cotton off the OUTSIDE of the condenser. Replace Shroud, 4 bolts and head ground side.

The others BLOW. Meaning they blow air out via the condenser

So .. Carrier Air V. Remove outer shroud (lots of phillips screws) and lift off

Remove INNER cover (more screws) and lift off
REMOVE FAN so you have room to work

Clean.. And re-assemble.. Tons more work

Advent air: The Inner Cover is taped and tabbed so you have to cut tape and unbend the tabs.. Of course you can only unbend/bend those tabs SO MANY TIMES.

the .2... The china bomb fan on the Advent Went BOOM!
.. I replaced it with a Coleman fan. now it sucks like a Coleman. Way easier to clean. Just manyu screws and the outer shroud.
  • Be apprised when removing the outer shroud that certain flying insects like to take up residence in there so, caution is advised or you might get stitched.

Been there, did that and always have a can of bug spray handy now.
  • You need to verify the top condenser and the Evaporator are fully clean. You also need to drop the round ceiling ducts on the drivers side interior and clean or replace the filters. RV AC units are sealed and cannot be charged economically. IF you have diminished cooling and you have a leak, odds are you have NO cooling as they only hold 1 lb of coolant. If you have a leak, the small amount of coolant leaks out pretty quick. The ONLY way to test for lack of charge is a temp correct amp draw on the compressor. Doug

Exactly, and units are really not that old!

The first thing I would check, if they are ducted, is if they are leaking cold air around the ducts at the unit itself. This requires you to remove the bottom cover and look up in to the unit and see if there are any cracks where the cold air is blowing in to the exhaust area or roof frame, rather than directly in to the duct.
The next thing to check is to pull the cover off on the roof and check that the coil is clear of any debris.
  • Did you go on the roof and clean the units. That is usually what diminishes cooling capacity. Need to clean both evaporator and condenser coils.

Also a good AC guy can add taps to recharge them. Had it done to one of mine a few years back. Worked Great
