Roof Vent

Considering installing a manual open no fan roof vent in our 2002 Dodge Ram Van. Attached hopefully is the photo of the van roof and you can see a square area that I am hoping is designed to accommodate such a vent. Has anyone ever installed one like this or similar? Is it something DIY or must it be done at a rv type shop?

Also should this question be posted somewhere else?

Thanks again

  • On youtube go to van customizing and look up Dan Travels van build videos. One shows cutting out vent hole. Be warned you may not stop there. You could get the bug.

    Just a side note:
Do yourself a big favor and put in a 'roof vent cover' at the same time. That will allow you to leave the roof vent open all the time rain or shine. They cost around 20 bucks. You will regret it if you don't! :W

And IMHO when cutting into a roof? I would take it to a dealership and have them install it. Just saying.
  • Make sure it is well sealed so no leaks. Remember a vent with no shroud over it is useless in rain.
  • Measure it and see if it is a 14" X 14" opening, which is the standard RV vent opening size. If it is, it's just a matter of what you have to do to cut it open. After that, it looks like a RV vent would be installed as they usually are. I'd suggest using 4" Eternabond tape rather than a bunch of lap sealant.
  • Never did one in a Dodge but many in Chevys and I preferred Ford vans. Measure the size of your roof "square" and buy one to fit your vehicle..
have plenty of good sabersaw blades on hand
