I've usually found it better to not become involved in other people's disputes, especially when you're only hearing one side of the story. I'm going to have to agree with Skip on this one.
The workcamper was unprofessional & spiteful in asking you to stay to the last minute just to spite the other camper. The workcamper's behavior says to me that the workcamper might have been equally unprofessional to the other camper.
Then when you were clearly delaying your departure, the other camper was justifiably annoyed. He probably went to the office to make sure he wasn't going to get screwed over with the campsite assignment.
Your mistake was in getting in the middle of the dispute. You should have just gone about your business as you would have otherwise.
