Running a diesel in the rain

I agree that wiring sounds the most likely. Most diesels, like ours, have the air intake up pretty high, and there are low areas in the intake line that allow any moisture to separate out and drip off so that it doesn't get to the engine. So I wouldn't think that would be very likely. In addition, most, if not all, air filters have a paper element that would not like water getting to it!!!
