Running a diesel in the rain

We were caught in a torrential downpour while returning home from a trip. We were in it for about 40 minutes. The engine (Cummins ISB 340) lost power twice within several minutes. It continued running, but no response to the throttle for several seconds. The second time the dash "warning" light flickered a couple times.

After we got home and things dried up, I checked for water in the primary fuel filter and saw none.

Could the symptoms come from all that moisture in the air getting pulled through the air filter?

Thanks,

  • The trouble came after we were on a county road that was collecting water, so there would have been plenty of splashing.

I've got some scheduled service coming up, and I'll ask the mechanic to take a look at the wiring.

    Thanks for the tip.
  • Usually something like this is caused by a connection problem in the wiring to and from the computer getting a little wet. Then drying out after the rain.
  • don't know about your vehicle but my 1999 ford chassis had the air intake low to the ground and in downpours it could pull water up into the air filter. they came out with a snorkel that made it draw air in from up high.
