I've never been told that, but it does make sense to me too. I can see how the motorhome manufacturers may not have planned for having the generator running while the motorhome was moving in the rain. Every time I check the oil on my generator I get a hand full of road grime. The generator is covered with it. So if running when that road grime was getting up there it would be clogging up the air filter. - msmith1199Explorer II

OP states while driving. I can not run mine as it is located right behind the left front wheel. It would definitely ingest water while running if I ran thru deep water.
My Onan is in its own case and it is tight, think it would float.
Then how does it get air to run? - et2ExplorerWell his comments were in reference to actually seeing the damaged cause by water. That it's possible to get into the system in "heavy" rain while driving. He said some generators ride lower than ours on the MH and its been a problem with them on occasion. Water and electricity coming together doesn't mix so well.
I'm not a electrician or mechanic, so I can only speculate. It does sound logical. Besides he wasn't trying to sell me anything. - JimM68Explorer

I think the person that worked on the op gennie needs to go back to school. Have never heard that or had any mechanic mention it. We have run ours in all types of weather and have never had any problems.

- rgatijnet1Explorer IIII would guess that you should be able to look at your generator and tell if the air cleaner cover has experienced road spray and other debris that has been deposited while driving in the rain. If it is clean, I would say it would be OK to use it during a rain storm.
