RV Campgrounds discount/saving clubs

I am thinking of buying a couple discount/saver type cards but have no idea as to the best ones to get you discounts at the campgrounds. Any idea of a couple I could buy and not cost a leg and an arm but actually help save on camp sites? I read so many and I am not up for the ones running hundreds to be used at only select sites. Something a little cheaper and more useful, please?
  • Some of them give 10% discounts (I've gotten that by showing them my library card). Can't beat the 50% discount from PPA. Don't OFTEN stay at RV Parking lots but we used it a lot on our snowbird trips to South Texas where we'd stay for up to a month at a time.
  • I think Good Sam and KOA pay for themselves over the course of the season but NOT a large amount of money. Get a BP or other gas card that saves 5% when their gas is purchased and that may save more money than the camping discounts.
  • If you are retired military you need to look into bases you will be around some have camp sites at a very reasonable cost.
  • Many CG's also give AARP and AAA discounts. We don't carry either of those. But we do have Passport America, KOA and Good Sam. The only one we renew every year is GS. The other's I tend to alternate.
  • We have the KOA card for the same reason mentioned previously: nights on the road on longer trips (we call KOAs the the Applebee's of CGs - you pretty much know what to expect, but typically it won't be the best ever, but it won't be the worst either) It pays for itself for us each year..haven't taken advantage of any points earned yet, though, but we have quite a few. We have Good Sam because we like their roadside assistance plan a little better than AAA. The Pilot/Flying J gas card through Good Sam is a bonus as is the Camping World free shipping and discounted pricing, but I think we've only gotten a CG discount once or twice with it. As mostly weekend warriors, we can't really take advantage of anything that offers mid-week discounts - which seems to be the norm with a lot of them now.
  • With the KOA card, you can sign up when you first reserve a spot or arrive at the campground.
With Passport America, you can sign up online while you're driving to the campground.
So with either, you can wait to sign up (or let the card expire and wait to renew) until you know you'll use it for at least a day or two.
  • I would steer clear the KOA card...I did the same as the other poster who said if he is not staying at many KOA's on a trip, don't renew. So I let it expire...you have 60 days according to the website to reinstate your points if you rejoin...so I did, within the time frame, but they dumped the points anyway. When I called to point out their error I got a very indifferent attitude from the several people whom I got (begrudgingly, I guess) transferred to. None of them could care less whether I kept membership or not. I was even told in a nasty way that they would reinstate some of my points but it will never happen again. WTH, it was their error! If everything else if equal anymore after this, KOA will be my LAST place to camp! You have to have 6500 points for a measly $10 off a campsite anyway. Woohoo. Costs $24 to join, you get a whopping 10% off. Needless to say, I cancelled the card.
  • I have a concealed carry permit and carry a gun wherever I travel. I noticed that some of you are staying at Military camp sites. I am retired military and would like to use the military camp sites too. The question is what do you do with your fire arm. Will it be necessary to check it into the provost marshall's office every time you go onto the base? Would be interested in knowing your experience in this. I don't go into Canada for just this reason.

You ask about the "best" that answer will be purely subjective, but IMHO, I Would say, the Federal passes, either the Senior pass, or the Access pass, followed by Passport America, then Good Sam.
  • Retiree,

The best bang for your buck is Military FAM Camps. You can look at the website, or buy their magazine at the BX. We have stayed from DC to California. DC was $13 a night. 15 minutes to the Mall of memorials.

Good Sam gives a wide choice, listed by state, town, prices, phone numbers, and ratings.

We recently went from Oklahoma to Washington D.C.. and never found a Passport America within 50 miles of our route. I will not renew it.

KOA camps are usually clean and safe!! Sometimes I don't find state parks as safe.

We don't look for a resort, just a safe, clean, reasonable price to spend a few hours resting, a good night sleep, or a place to use as a
base camp to use to visit the tourism sites around the area.

    HAPPY CAMPING
