RV camping , NASCAR at P.I.R., Phoenix.

Our first trip in our motorhome might be at the November race. Looking for all the advice we can get so we can have a good experience.
Before,

After,

Paid $1,500.00 for this and all works well. I just put new trim molding and painted the wheels and doors. Wash & Waxed the driver side and it looks much better :)

  • Camping at PIR is more like a party than camping.
There is lots of noise. Usually the loudest noise ends at midnight. There is tons of smoke (not JUST Tony Stewart.... lol). It's great if you like to party.
For places to park.... less partying and better roads for walking... as you are pulling in to the rv area, park to the left, not to the right, of the main street (the yellow, brown, or blue sections).
The market is great... prices are just a tiny bit higher, not much, as you might expect.
The tram system is wonderful for getting you to where you want to go.
To help with the noise, if you are traveling with a group, it's good to group into a U or Square formation.
The spaces are not rigid at all... the early bird gets the worm :) If you arrive early, say, by Wednesday, you should have your pick of spots. Take as much room as you need.... set up what you can so somebody else won't park and crowd you.
The first time I went, if I knew about the noise, and Nascar Nutty people (said in the fondest of terms), then I would have enjoyed it more. I've since been a couple more times, and enjoyed it quite well.
It's definitely an experience I am glad I had!

  • Just purchased tickets for next years March race in Las Vegas. A nice second row infield spot at turn 4 for seven days was $900. That included passes for six adults and a saturday admission to the "electric garage". Arrive on monday before the race and leave on monday after. This will be a first time for us and our 4 year old grandson, who's crazy about cars will go nuts.
It looks like level asphalt marked spaces and you get to bring in one tow vehicle for transportatrion in and out.
Although we live in AZ we opted for Vegas because it's a much bigger venue with more to do during the week than just be at the track.
  • Unfortunately I can't address Phoenix as we haven't been there, but have been to a bunch of the tracks a little further east.

Yes camping is somewhat expensive for what you get. Frequently a slightly marked spot in an open field, but if that's what is available it works. You will sometimes find spots that are well out of level and will need enough blocking to level even if you have jacks. Water isn't usually a problem if you are just a little conservative. If you need additional water it can be carried with you in various ways or often will be available from vendors who work the camping areas. Obviously for a price.

As for the race itself. Be prepared with sunscreen, fluids for drinking and hearing proection as desired. I can't emphasize any more than others about how much scanners and headsets add to the enjoyment of most racing events. I find myself listening to numerous drivers, NASCAR officials and track workers along with the radio and TV feeds. There is so much more information available that way and you can see the race from a completely different perspective when you know more about what is going on. The noise reduction from the headsets are just another bonus. Bristol is probably the most consistently loud venue we have been to. It just never drops off since cars are all around the track all of the time.

Go, enjoy, and try not to be in too big of a rush to get out of there. If time allows even having an extra day available makes things a lot easier when you don't have to contend with the after race traffic and rush to get home.
  • Have not RV'd at Phoenix but the advice on head sets is right on! I have been to many car races around the world but none as noisy as PIR. Even wearing ear plugs my ears hurt from the noise. Not sure why but be sure to wear ear protection. Bob
  • I just want the car.......however we love camping at talledaga.
  • I went to last Novembers race at PIR! It was way to noisy for me I was sitting next to my wife and we couldn't hear each other talk or the PA system. I recommend getting the headsets at the track that way you can hear what's going on! Most people around me were wearing them. It's an awesome site when you go up over the hill at the track and looking at 24,000 RV's! I'm not a big NASCAR guy it was on my bucket list of things to do. I really enjoy the "The Greatest Show on Dirt" The World of Outlaws, Sprint Cars!
  • We attended the March PIR race and had a great time. The good camping is on asphalt near track and race trailers. Camping is not cheep but worth the price. That coach looks great. We attended the race with a group of Tiffin coaches. Enjoy the coach and have a good time at the race. Rob
