Pine trees everywhere have shallow root systems. They do not have a "tap root" like some trees. I have seen pines of all types in the mountains of Northwestern Montana that were uprooted by high winds. The "root ball" is about 15 feet in diameter, and 3 to 4 feet deep. That is why loggers gave up on the idea of leaving a huge tree in the middle of a clear cut for a "seed tree". Without the protection of other trees, it just could not stand.
