Safari Serengeti DP - Any Opinions?

It may be underpowered if you are going up grades above 5%. The looks are good but as you said no slide, which is needed at least in the galley area.

Very familiar with Safaris. What year? What suspension?

1996. Not sure of the chassis. I talked to the seller, I think he said something that started with M. (I know, I'm a rube).

Magnum chassis was probably what he has-- Safari's in-house brand.

If you get more information, feel free to post or Private Message. As you can see we are very familiar with the 1997 Safari Sahara-- just got back from a 5000+ mile trip this summer.

Safari made a great coach. The metal sides are awesome. My friend has one and after being washed looks brand new. Also, the floorplans make it feel roomy without the slides.

I agree, I've always liked the 90's Safari models! Everyone of the coaches that I looked at all of them had CAT motors! I looked at a 1997 Safari brand new at a RV Show at Cal Expo in Sacramento it was a very nice coach!

Thanx all for the replies. I spoke to the seller and he has another interested buyer. I asked him to call me if the deal fell through, but now I have an avenue to look down.

I would worry more about a 1996 bonded panel delaminating than an Al skin corroding. Sometimes rivet heads will corrode under paint but to me this is a small issue. The Al skin stringer construction would be a plus especially at the age. I would also look at the weight 300hp pushing 30k lbs would be slow on hills.

I would say if you can get a good price on it, it would be a good direction. We have a 99' harney, which may have been made at that time by Safari, depending on who you talk to at Monaco. Honestly, I think we could be fine for our uses never opening the slide. Of course since we have it, we use it! It would be tight up front with the couch layed down without the slide. Ours is 275 hp, and we pull around an 8,000 box trailer with it in Illinois. Piece of cake. Big long hills could slow you down, but I wouldn't let 300 hp bother me in the least.

I owned a 1995 Safari Sahara for about 5 yrs, and put about 50,000 miles on it. Mine was a 35ft with the 5.9 Cummins with 230hp and the MD3060 Allison. They are built on their in-house "Magnum" chassis. Mine had a fiber glass roof, spring suspension and hydraulic brakes. I had some brake issues, mostly calipers sticking. The ride wasn't too bad if one would fill the fresh water tank before traveling.

This unit consistently made 8-10 mpg. Mine also had the stainless steel basement doors. Gross weight on mine was 22,000 lbs. I never did actually weigh it. For its era it was a very nice motor home and of the 5 different Class A's I've owned, it was one of my favorites. Many times I've regretted trading it.

Having the small diesel and no air brakes or suspension, it was about as cheap to maintain as a gas model. The mid to late 90's Safari's are a great buy.
