Satelite roof mount location

My question is a long shot. Our coach is a 2002 HR Vacationer, wired for Satellite. Originally a marking on the roof indicated where the box was located containing the cables but has since worn off. If I remember it was near the front cap center roof but I can not recall how far back from the cap. My question, is there anyone on this site that has my particular coach Holiday Rambler Vacationer with a satellite dome on it that would be able to give me an idea where to drill the roof to gain access to the cables. Monaco/HR weren't able to assist with any as built drawing. Thank you for your help. Mac

Yes, it will be located under a fixture, often fluorescent, but sometimes upgraded mods have other types of fixtures. It can even be strip lights around decorative wood. It should be located in the same spot.

  • Just slightly off topic but have you considered the portable units. We have both but if I had to choose one it would be the portable one. Too often we park with a tree in the way for the dome.
  • Thanks everyone, lots of good ideas. Don has a good point as my cables probably are not the right ones. This gives me a good start to location and to trace what's there for cable entry. Any pictures would also be helpful. Thanks again for your response. Mac
  • I have a 2002 Monaco Windsor and may be similar to your HR. My cables are input above the front mounted TV and pretty close to the front cap (fiberglass roof). If cables are not already run up there, I figure you can put it anywhere you want it. I have the Wingard Travler and there are two cables that go through the fiberglass then back to the Tavler.

I have to take my high mounted TV out to get to where the cables go up and through the roof. If you think this helps, I can send you a picture of my set-up.
  • On my Monaco coach, the location for the cables to come in to the interior was right over a wall. There was a hole where the cables would be fed down within the wall and then routed wherever they needed to go from behind the cabinets. There were no cables already run, except for the crank up antenna.
  • "mac51"......The interior of your coach has a series of fluorescent lights in the center of the main cabin roof. On my 2005 Diplomat, you could remove the second fluorescent light from the front and see the wires in the roof. They consist of one coaxial cable and two 12 volt leads (+ & -). Mine was under the light just behind the two front seats, so about six feet back from the windshield.

With that said, make sure you know what your new satellite needs for connection. We installed a Winegard Travler, open dish, automatic antenna and it requires a coaxial cable and a command cable, so the prewired cables from Monaco were useless. They're also pinned down at various points, so you can't use the old ones to pull new ones through.

Unless your new satellite uses what Monaco installed, you're better off to just run the cables along the roof and drop them into the entertainment cabinet. Drilling from the entertainment cabinet, up through the roof is the best way to know where to run the cables down from the roof.
  • Find where it is from the inside, stick a magnet to the inside of the roof, then use another magnet to locate it from the roof side. Assuming that you have access to the box from inside. On the inside, if it is not apparent, check in behind the ceiling speakers, or behind a light fixture. On my class A, the wires and a connector for the TV antenna is behind one of the speakers, and the natenna cable and the speaker wires follow the same route.
