Satellite SWM and Genie

I have SWM in my motorhome. I just added a Genie with one connect and two wireless mini extensions. I still have a couple of DVR's so I can take them in the motorhome. If I want to take my Genie when I go for the winter because with the mini units it takes so much less space do I have to remove the power inserter that is behind the panels? The Genie HR54 already has the power inserter but I have one wired it and would prefer to keep it so I could use the regular dvr for short trips when I want to have the gender at home for those who are home. So simple question. Can I still operate the Genie without removing the power inserter that has been in the system for the simple SWM setup?
  • I hooked up the Genie with the HR54. A power inserter was already installed. I did not remove it. Plugged in the HR54 and a wired mini. Both work beautifully. I had contacted directv and was told I would need to remove the power inserter as it would conflict with the one in the HR54. I argued that the HR54 would disable itself if another power inserter was in line. She said no. She was wrong. World's fine.
  • The Single wire multi-switch requires that the lnb be powered and therefore the power inserter.. The new HR54 has the power inserter built-in. In my motorhome I used two dver's connected to a matrix switch so we can watch either of the dvr's on any tv. The dvr's are large so barely fit in the rack. So I want to bring the Hr54 and a wired mini. The dvr is smaller than others and the mini is just that. So I think this will be even better than my older system. With everything in one location there is no need to have a dvr in bedroom or outside as it is all powered by the matrix switch. Works well.
  • I should have added that the Genie like the HR44 has 5 tuners on the single coax. It is also the ONLY Genie receiver because the Genie Clients for remote TVs get their channel to watch from the HR44 on the coax. ie They do not have tuners. Even the wireless Genie Clients get there channels from the wireless bridge which is connected to the receiver via coax.
  • My understanding is that SWM supports 8 channels. My HR44 can record/watch 5 HD channels. During my transition from the HR24 I had 7 channels.

We watch very little live TV and mostly time shift, skip ads and generally can watch a 1 hr program in 30-40 minutes. Recording is also used when trees block the satellite. The HR44 has 3 connections and is moved from house to RV, automatically adjusts for the different TV resolutions and with the RF remote it's mounted vertically in a closed cabinet. ie Plug and play.

Single Wire Multiswitch- The technology to use a single coax for multiple channels. Reduces coax wiring plus wireless is supported for remote TVs.

thanks. that was a new one for me.

  • I believe you have just defined the DTV requirement for a separate RV account. ie Receivers at 2 different locations.

Why not just bring the brick out into the cabinet and just bypass it when you connect the HR54?

    SWM???
  • I think I found the answer. The HR54 detects another PI an deactivates it's built in PI. This stuff has gotten better but some more complicated. I will try over the weekend and post if it doesn't work.
