Screws in the ceiling?

I need to replace a ceiling-mounted CO detector and I can't find any current models that fit the existing base plate, so it looks like I have to attach a new base plate to the interior ceiling. The ceiling appears to be some kind of padded vinyl. Can I just use screws to attach the new base plate and detector?

    Double sided sticky tape, that fat stuff that's impossible to remove once you stick it on.

    But, if you use the exact same screws that hold it on now, you'll probably be OK. If you do have to get a new screw, don't get anything longer than what's currently there.

    I'd do the double sided sticky fat tape myself.
