Seized Onan...rebuild or replace?

To bad Yamaha didn't make a replacement to fit in the same compartment . I have a 1800 inverter one that I use to run my 5th
wheel. If I had a choice I would listen to that Yamaha all day sipping fuel instead of the microquiet. The only onan I liked was the 7500k diesel in my DP.

You mentioned rear sp.plug hard to access...have you checked or replaced that plug recently? If it is misfiring on that cylinder, it could be why unit quit running. also have seen excessive carbon build-up on top of piston and in combustion chamber cause the engine to not turn over (Carbon locked) also check rear ball bearing on rotor shaft (where you put allen wrench to turn over engine) if bearing is getting dry, can lock up. Engine failures are not common on this model,( but possible of course), as it is a relatively slow running engine (1800 rpm), has a large oil sump (3.5 qt), and full pressurized oiling for internal components

Thanks all. While there has always been a short delay when the A/C compressor kicks in, it is now much longer. It used to take 2-3 seconds, now it is at least a full 5-6 seconds or more, during which time the A/C really sounds like it's struggling. Perhaps that is still within normal range, but it concerns me since it is noticeably longer than prior to the seizure.

I'm thinking that a Hard Start Capacitor could help. Any feedback on that?

As Ron mentioned, it is a good practice to allow the generator to warm up for a few minutes before adding loads and to allow it to continue running for a few minutes after all loads have been removed.

It sounds normal for the generator to bog down during a/c startup. Especially the first time running after being taken out from storage. I like to run the generator for about 3 minutes before loading it heavy, just to let it warm up and smooth out beforehand.

Don't forget to set your altitude adjustment to your true altitude. It is a very sloppy adjustment. I tend to set it all the way in one direction or the other, or half way in between.

Update:

As CloudDriver suggested, I found that the generator end (as opposed to the Engine end) has an allen bolt head that is accessible. I found the correct large size allen wrench and was able to break it loose. The generator now starts and runs, voltage output is 122 VAC with the A/C running. The only thing I notice is that when the A/C compressor kicks on, the generator struggles for about 5 seconds before it kicks the RPM up to actually get the A/C compressor kicked in.

I can see no way of accessing the bolt on the end of the flywheel or..without removing the entire unit. That is not something I am looking forward to, but I guess I will have to do it. In fact, I can't even access the back spark plug.

I too support the idea that you might be able to turn the engine over with a wrench. If you are not successful, remove the spark plug (or plugs) and pour in a couple ounces of PB Blaster, let sit overnight, then try again. If no luck, you might be able to free the piston by screwing in a long bolt inside the spark plug hole. If you break the piston, your engine was toast anyway.

I do wonder if your problem is something completely different. Maybe something with the generator portion. Maybe the starter, maybe something else. 211 hours is not a lot and given your oil level was proper, it just does not make sense that the engine has seized up.

georgia boy maverick, off brand gen turns over but will not crank..if i purchase i will get to the problem...maybe even swap out the unit...lane

Hour meter is only at 211. Haven't had a chance to do anything further yet.
