SELF MADE WINDSHIELD SUNSCREEN

Some time ago a RVer put a how to article on here. He detailed how to make a sunscreen I would appreciate any help in finding those instructions. I failed miserably in my searches.
  • About six years ago we made a custom three sided one for our MH. On the ends we had an aluminum bar sewn into a pocket connected to a marine suction cup used to hold boat bumpers onto the side of a fiberglass hull. Clicky

DW and I first took the sunshade material and taped it to the MH. With pins DW then customized it to fit the MH. Took it all down in one big piece and she sewed it all together. Came out really well and would cut the heat inside the rig by 10-15 degrees.

Inside or outside? I've made/carry three different types. The easiest is a inside one that uses suction cups which I made from sunshade cloth and five 2" suction cups. You can buy one for $130 on Ebay like the below.

I made a outside one for really hot direct sun out of the foil material below. By gluing wooden battens into each end with short straps with snaps plus a support in the middle, I can put it on the outside without using a ladder. The center support is a reinforced hole in the material that goes over a screw that I installed below my center clearance light. By rolling it up from both ends to the middle, it's easy to get the hole over the screw when you start to put it on.

I snagged a really good deal on a surplus black outside windshield shade made for my Monaco which included the three side window shades. Instead of using the dozen snaps for the windshield I added wooden battens to it and a short tap in the middle that goes over my middle screw. Like the above, I can put it on without using a ladder. I did use the snaps for the three side windows but the one on the driver's side requires a ladder to put on/off. Hope this helps.
  • There is a thread about ten threads down about making magnetic shades.

I bought a Prompt RV Shade. Goes up in five minutes. No drilling.
  • We recently made our sunscreen for our 2004 Newmar Scottsdale. We used fabric purchased at a local fabric store in their outdoor fabric section. It's black and acts like a solar fabric like the MDC shades or the other solar shades. You cannot see in the motor home but you can see out clearly. We used Velcro along the top of the shade and above the windshield. It works well, keeping our rig cooler in the hot sun. We also looked for "EzSnaps" by 3M to hang the shade, but so far the Velcro is working.
