Shade or privacy screen or not?

Hi we have a 20 foot auto retract Dometic A&E Awning. The retract system has never really worked right so we just leave it off. Could have it fixed again but just a pain really. Now I would like to make a sort of private area where you can slip that screen into the little groove and then tie down the shade piece and I would also secure the awning at both ends so it does not bounce around. What I am wondering if there are any that really provide any privacy to speak of? for perhaps a few folks in sleeping bags? Also I cannot seem to find one that fits in that groove. I keep seeing instant up Cabanas screen shelters etc that would be separate and am thinking that would be a better option, no attaching or a tent, but something about having a semi screen room really speaks to me when at the beach or close quarters. I tried a home made deal with Velcro but I realize now you have to have the gourmets at the bottom to spike it?
I have seen ones for sale that have hooks in them but reviews say thatis tedious...any help or ideas appreciated...

  • We have a 5'er and have a small slide on the entrance side. When we were at the beach this year, we put up our EZ up , but did not open our awning. We placed the EZup against the slide and tight against the 5'er, so one side was protected and another was partially protected. We added our screen, which hooks to the EZup. It takes about 15 minutes to attach all the hooks. We also have a solid side that we can attach for complete privacy. If I were to sleep someone in there, I would have the solid sides on 2 sides facing the majority of foot and vehicle traffic. (They would also sleep on cots or something off the ground.

Also keep in mind that some of these are water-resitant, but not waterproof!!
  • My friends have Cabana and love it except they can only see out the door. It hangs around the whole awning but the windows are cut too high when you are sitting on a chair. Wind doesn't bother it even in T Storms.
  • I'd go the separate way also- we have an easy up and a Coleman insta clip screen room- you can see into it but what I like about them is we can put them where we want to get as much shade as we can. our awning is so high it's not always good at blocking the sun
  • Separate would probably be better, if folks are sleeping it it. But we found one of those shade screens in one of our compartments... it was brand new, never used. (We bought a used MH and got a LOT of extra goodies with it). Once we figured out what the shade screen was and we put it up, I absolutely love it at the beach. Wish we had figured out what it was a lot sooner than we did. LOL
  • I'd go the separate way. If big wind came up you probable couldn't get all that stuff off the awning before damage was done. Separate could be moved where you wanted it.
