Shampooing RV rugs.

Hello!

My dad was wondering if it was possible to shampoo rv rugs like you would with house rugs?

He is new to rving, so any answer would help greatly!
  • I use the same machine and cleaning liquid as I use in the house. Carpet in the coach for some reason always seems to come cleaner than the house carpets.

Sometimes the coach builders would completely tile a coach floor before cabinets, permanent furniture and cabinets were installed so your could have a liquid barrier under the carpet but I can't think of a non destructive test to find out.
  • If you want to save money, do it yourself. If you want it clean, hire a pro with a truck-mounted cleaner.
  • I have had real good luck with dry carpet cleaners, more so than wet or even paying someone $140 to do my 32' Tiffin a few years back. When the carpet dried, I went and re-did it on my hands and knees and it was cleaner than what the "professional" guy did. Dry shampoo you just lightly brush into the carpet, let it sit awhile and then shop vac it out. I had a product bought at a car parts store once (can't remember name)that even took out red wine stains on a light tan car carpet.
  • You can. Might consider using Stanley Steamer. They did a good job and included the furniture. For the price you want them to do all they can. Good advice on waiting to warmer days.
  • We shampoo our carpet once a year. Be frugal with the soap and rinse twice. Once you're done, use some old car wash towels and dry any wet spots around the edges. Lay the towels down and walk on them. It only takes a few minutes to do a little extra drying with some towels.

I then turn on some fans and open windows.
  • I would not do it in the winter time. Summer heat and quicker drying times. Also, I've found steaming cleans just as well with less moisture in the carpeting....Dennis
  • Yes, you can but you want to make sure you extract as much of water as possible when doing so. It's also best to do it at a time of year with the temperature and relative humidity will help dry things completely quickly, but you could also use a dehumidifier. Do be warned that the carpeting in most every camper is about the lowest grade manufactured, so it won't hold up to repeated heavy cleanings especially if you're looking to use a rotary scrubber shampooing machine (versus beater bar).
  • No problem. Just make sure you allow for plenty of ventilation for the carpet to dry.
  • Just use the carpet shampooers that you can rent and do it the same way as your house. Be careful not to use too much water in any one location and suck out all of the waste water that you can. Make sure that he uses whatever he has to insure that the carpet dries as quickly as possible. This may mean running the AC or heater a little longer than usual, or opening the coach up in a low humidity area so that it dries quickly and completely.
