I am not sure how to clean slip rings on Generac units. Onans you can get a flexiable non-metalic burnishing tool.
I would follow the neutrals from the genset all the way to the transfer switch.
Some rigs with frontmounted gensets have more then one junction box.
With only 256 hours, it is more likely a bad splice. I would check them all while in the boxes.
