Short corded small appliance dilemma

The electrical outlets in the kitchen of my 2011 Ellipse 42QD are mounted on the underside of the kitchen cabinets....about 18 inches above the counter top. My toaster, coffee pot and other small kitchen appliances have 2 foot power cords making it nearly impossible to plug them in and have enough cord left to place the appliances where I need them. All the owners manuals say:DO NOT USE AN EXTENSION CORD WITH THIS APPLIANCE. I've searched Google and Amazon for toasters, etc with longer cords (3 to 5 foot) without success. How would you handle this dilemma? I'm craving some wheat toast and a coffee...please respond soon! Thanks!
  • The reason they come with short cords is to prevent them from being dropped into sinks with water and potentially electrocuting someone. The national electrical code for many years has mandated minimum distance that an outlet can be to a sink, it has also mandated that outlets in kitchens be equipped with GFCI breakers for at least the last 20 years. If the appliance cord is kept shorter than the minimum legal distance between a sink and an outlet and a tag is included saying not to use extension cords, then the manufacturers of the appliance have done all they can to insure someone does not try to clean it in a sink full of water while it is plugged in, etc.

First off I just looked at my coffee maker and rice cooker just now both have 3.5 ft cords>>second using a short extension cord is a 100% fine with your appliance I have no idea where u read this but its not true EOS
  • I had the same problem and THESE work perfect.

I have been using them for fifteen years on all kinds of small appliances with no problems. If someone wants to get pickey about it :E I don't beleive they qualify as an "extension" cord :B

These short cords come in other variations as well HERE and HERE

    Good luck!
  • We use a power strip. It plugs on the side of the kitchen counter, lays across the back of the counter. We plug the toaster & coffee pot into it. Haven't had any problems in the 3 years we've been doing it.
  • You can use an extension cord. Just get a good one, not the cheapest. You can plug different things in it at the same time, just don't use more than one at a time. Remember the appliances will all be on the same circuit.

The warning is the mfr covering themselves. Because people can be incredibly stupid with extension cords.

A good plug strip is probably the simplest solution.
