Shortening our MIrrors? Any help out there?

We have a 2014 Forest River class C Sunsetter motorhome, that we would like to shorten the mirrors at least 4 inches, has anyone ever shortened theirs and how did they do it?
We can't see the towed vehicle with the ones on it, so would really like to have them shorter, so they don't hit into mailboxes, Electric poles that are so close to the road.
Any info or links would really be appreciated by us, as I would really like to start driving too, along with hubby, to help him enjoy the trips we g on, as much as I do right now.

  • Look into mirrors that telescope out, My GMC pick up has mirrors that can be pulled out when towing and pushed back in when not, they still stick out and look obnoxious but I have grown accustomed to them. I fully understand the country roads you speak of and see the concern.

Look up 'telescoping mirrors for Chevy" they have options that may fit your needs.
  • Are you talking about shortening their height or lessening their distance to the motorhome (how far they stick out)?

In either case, this can be fixed by buying different mirrors and having them installed. One can also get retractable mirrors such as what can be found on trucks. Do a search on retractable power side mirrors. Both chevy and ford make them so you can probably find a set that fit your class C. You might be able to find them at a auto junk yard, also.
  • Thank you Sam Spade, I do understand your comment.
Do you happen to live where the roads are designated as 2-lane roads but are only really wide enough for one reg. sized vehicle and maybe, just maybe a bike?
That is how our roads here in WV are, at least some of the ones we have to travel on to reach the Interstate.
I am not trying to be mean, or argumentative, but just needed a bit of info about shortening those mirrors.
I get exactly what you are saying, Thanks!!!

    Let's say this plainly:

If the mirrors are hitting things, the unit is NOT being driven right.

If your hubby is the driver, he needs to stop blaming the mirrors and adjust his attitude a bit.

If you make the mirrors shorter, you will not be able to see the back of the RV as well......nor vehicles approaching from the rear. And backing will be MUCH more difficult, with or without a tow or camera. Totally BAD idea.

I guess we may have to live with them sticking out so far, but it is annoying. LOL
I have drove a Chevy Dually and am fairly proficient in driving a large vehicle, but Hubby hates the mirrors and is constantly cussing the man who invented them for their sticking out so far. I have not driven this MH much, so I guess we may have to get used to it, as is. Thanks for all the input!!!
  • I would much prefer to scrape my mirror against an obstacle than do damage to the side of the motorhome.
  • you might drive your rv over to a shop that deals in trailers, they got lots of ways to change things.
