should I consider older diesel pusher?

Hi. I'm not sure if I pasted the link correctly. What do you think of this rig? Looking for something that is comfortable to take family on long road trips. Any idea on reliability or mpg?

  • Your mileage will be closer to 6 than 10. I get between 6.5 and 7.5 on mine.
  • Regarding the bunks, I have two small kids so the bunks would be very useful. Its funny, I had started off looking at Class C bunkhouses. They felt a little small and typically don't have leveling jacks so I bumped up my search to small gas Class A. I then figured if I'm looking at a 32' Class A I might as well look at adding a few extra feet. So then I ended up looking at rigs like a 2008 Winnebago 35J. And now I'm looking at a DP. Does it ever stop? :-)

I love the feedback. If it helps to understand what I'm trying to do, I live in Portland and have two primary uses for the motorhome. Many short trips to the coast and many long (2k+ mile) trips. All with the family. My current trailer really works great for the short trips but I am thinking that a motorhome will be a lot better for the long trips.

Any idea on what sort of MPG a 1998 40' DP gets? I ask that because if I do 15k miles per year the difference between 10 mpg vs 6 mpg is about $3k or the equivalent of the cost several additional trips. I am guessing that a 40' DP will get about the same MPG as a 35' Gas Class A... maybe 7mpg average?

Mostly I will not be towing anything.
  • There are 3 of those advertised around here right now but none have the bunks. Prices are $55K to $62K so that thing is priced in the right neighborhood. Don't know where someone came up with $25k, thats dreaming. These are good high end coaches that give tons of service and are far better than a newer entry level DP thats priced the same. Just make sure everything works correctly.
  • If you don't need the bunks, it would make some great floor to ceiling storage by taking out the bed frames and enclosing the space with finish matched cabinet frames and doors.
  • I wouldn't be worried about the age or the mileage. I'd rather see a few miles on the older buses; it means they've been run. The interior looks nice, but will you use all that bunk space? If not, it sacrifices a lot of storage.

The only other concern I have is the price. I think it's about $10k to high. Oh, and if that's a Norcold fridge, make sure it's had all the recalls done.
