Slide Opening and Closing

I own a 2006 Four Winds Magellan Class A Motorhome and my Master slide (Drivers side) does not open out even, and same when closing.
I have to toggle the switch to attain a even closure. If I don't do that the edges of the slide start to buckle the edges of the slide.

Need Help.
  • Who makes your slide gearing in my case it's a power gear and one motor runs the gears for for each end of the slide. In your case I would look for loose rod connections (the rod that connects each gear to the motor) for play .
  • My rods are connected. Is there an adjustment to sinc the closure balance. Thanks
  • More inspection is required by you. There may be a pin/bolt sheared on one side of the slide, preventing that side from extending/retracting. Have someone active the slide power, and watch it from the outside to see if both sides start moving at the same time.
  • I had a similar problem, and found a sheared roll pin (spring pin ) that locks the spur gear to the shaft from the motor. Just recently I had a clunking sound as well as the slide not coming out evenly. I found that the spur gear had lost 1 tooth, causing it to skip and not allowing the slide to come out evenly. It sounds terrible. I'm currently awaiting a new gear. Pick up a "long" pin punch set to get out the roll pin if that's the problem. Good luck
  • Ditto on the sheared bolt for the shaft. I had the identical problem where one side of my slide would not go out or come in evenly. Found a sheared bolt in the shaft, replaced it and the slide works perfectly now. Be sure you have everything lubed with slide dry lube as well to make sure it's not just binding somewhere, and make sure there is nothing that has gotten under the slide or in between the walls/slide seals that might be putting a bind on it as it tries to activate.

    Good luck!
  • Thanks Friends for you knowledge and information. I keep you all posted. by the way where do you get the new gear? thanks Again
  • I just examined my slide extenders and discovered that I don't have screws or chains but rather hydraulic cylinders similar to large shock absorbers with fluid line attachments. I was wondering if this type of system requires something like bleeding the brake line to make a even opening and closing of my slides.
  • I had that problem with a fifth wheel it would equalize but it ended up braking a stud in the wall. I took it to a repair shop suggested by the manufacturer. They told me that one cylinder needed to be rebuilt. I was able to remove some paneling on the inside and replaced the 2x2 stud with a 2x4 on its side reinforced with an angle iron. While I was working on it a fellow came along and wanted to buy the FW and I told him I needed to fix the cylinder and he said "I can fix anything". We agreed on a cash price and I took it to his site. And I never saw it again.
  • Tither...Although I am not familiar with your hydraulic system for your slide operation, I'd just like to offer some "general" thoughts.
In many hydraulic systems they have installed "flow control" that do just that, control the flow of the fluid, and thus regulate the speed of the cylinder. Assume for a moment the cylinder is in the retracted position. To make it extend forward, pressure is applied to the end of the cylinder ( not the rod end)and fluid tries to flow in. However, for the cylinder to extend, fluid must exit out of the other end. The flow is regulated by the flow control device at each end of the cylinder, or at the other end of each fluid line.( Not sure of your setup ) Opening will make the cylinder move more quickly and closing will make it go slower. No two cylinders will react the same, and if not regulated, will make one go faster than the other. Take a good look at your system, read "the book", and make only small adjustments as you go.
Hope that helps, at least that's how it should work.
  • Thanks Guys. I will have a closer look. Let you know what happens.
