Slideout extended while driving?

The electrical locks on my full-wall slideout are not engaging and I’m concern that the slideout will extend as I’m driving down the road.

The slideout on my ’08 Fleetwood Providence moves in and out OK, but neither the front nor rear lock that grabs the RV’s sidewall moves into position at the end of the retraction. Power Gear made the mechanism.

I’m on the road and have about 2,000 more miles planned for this trip. A bit of on-line research has convinced me that this is a problem I can’t address. I’ve read that there are locks on the motors that move the slideout, from which I infer that the wall locks are a supplemental safety system. Today I drove 155 miles without any problems and am leaning towards staying with my itinerary. But has anyone ever had his or her Power Gear full-wall slide out extend while running down the road?

seems to me that kalsbeek has the correct solution, or at least if that remedies the problem. correct the problem, don't just slap on a band aid.

  • I totally agree about going to wally world and getting some curtain rods or shower rods and install them between the slide and wall. My BIL's TT came with a bar to use in that fashion when they first started making the slides on TT's.
  • Heres a simple way to give you the assurance your looking for:
Close the slide, measure the distance from the slide border to the wall. Cut a piece of 2x4 to that length plus a 1/2". Place that 2x4 on the floor between the border of the slide and the wall and step on it. It will wedge itself in tightly and that slide won't budge. No way, no how.
  • Hi John.
I have an 08 Bounder diesel.....same set up as yours so here goes as I had the same issue and easy to fix.

1.Extend the slide all the way.
2.Go underneath and you will see the motor on the shaft that turns the gears at the ends. On the motor's end there is a brake lever covered in a rubber cover. It is about 4-6 inches long.
    3. Turn it counter clockwise to release it completely. Then immediately turn it back hard to its locked position (clock wise).
    4. Run the slide in all the way and you will hear the lock click when fully retracted. If it does all is OK.
Worked for me 3 years ago and never failed again.
Good luck and let us know the result please.
  • Probably not a problem. I doubt you have anything to worry about.

But if it really concerns you that much, go to Walmart and buy a couple of spring loaded compression curtain rods. Adjust the length and stick them between the edge molding and the inside of the wall. On the front and rear of each slide out. They will be strong enough to hold the slide out from moving out. If you are concerned with their strength, just double up with two on front and two on back.
  • I have a 4 slide unit with no slide locks what so ever and in two years never had one move out even 1/4 inch while driving. Two are hydralic and two are 12V gear driven
