Sliding Pocket Door repair

At our rear bedroom we have a Pocket Door that slides into the wall. On this current trip, something happened at the end of the door that slides furthest into the wall. It somehow seems that it has fallen out of the track. Perhaps the mechanism failed, etc. Unfortunately, I can find no way to remove the door from the wall "pocket" in order to repair it. It seems that door itself is quite a bit wider than the opening. There is a trim piece/molding that the closes against and can latch closed, but it seems that even if I remove this piece, there still will not be enough room to remove the door from the wall cavity. Any suggestions?

  • Mark, I believe our pocket doors are similar or the same. From what I can tell the door is suspended by a double roller hangers that have tension between the two rollers to fit in to the double track hanger guide.

I am thinking that your rear hanger has broken... So two challenges... how to get access to replace and where to get a new hanger...

Think I would give Newmar a call... RE access and replacement part.

In looking at mine..the hanger is held in place with screws... If the hanger were to allowed to be lowered slightly it might be possible to gain access and compress the spread of the two rollers of the front support roller. I am thinking that there is enough clearance that once the door is no longer suspended to extract the door by either moving the door forward or to the rear to clear the less than an inch recess with the door fully closed. Then you would be able to have access to the rear hanger roller.

  • Those rotating brackets (Dick B) can become unfastened. My issues have always been with the one farthest back from opening. Roller has, so far, always been in track and against outside wall. I use the awning rod to catch roller and pull it out into opening then it can be put back into bracket and latched. I've had to do this way to many times, although most of the time it is due to failure to latch door in open position prior to travel.
  • Is it off the front roller? If so, you should be able to move the front edge of the door behind the roller it is off of, then tip the bottom of the door out (from the trim side) while lifting the front corner of the door and then slowly moving the door forward over the roller. It is difficult, but it can be done. Good luck!
  • When my pocket door needed service at the factory they removed all the trim around the vertical door frame where the door comes out of the pocket and were able to access the tracks and hanging brackets some how. Probably worth a call to Newmar CS to verify.
  • On our door there is are two rotating brackets? on the top that attach the door to the track. If you rotate the one easiest to get at and detach that end of the door you might be able to remove it.
I actually had the track come out of the ceiling to which it was attached and I had to add more screws all along the track to better hold it in place. We now travel with the door closed where I have added more screws. Stuff a rag between the top bracket and door jam to hold it in place for travel.
  • I don't know, but I'll give it a try. Thanks! I'll let you know what happens.

Is there any way you can open the door fully then raise the end where it slides back in the wall and try and slip it back onto the track? It would be similar to installing a shower door on its track.

Do this by sliding some kind of wedge or screwdriver under the bottom.
