Smell of Mold with no Visible Signs of Water

I have a 2007 Gulf Stream Endura 6362 and have been smelling a musty mold smell in the back bedroom near the closet on the slideout side. I have looked everywhere and there is no sign of water. Two falls ago the external shower sprung a leak and put water on the other side of the rig where the furnace is located, but it's hard for me to believe that incident would cause this smell. Any ideas?

  • Thanks for the hints and suggestions everyone. I think Dahkota may have resolved the issue. I discovered a quilt my wife put in the closet where the smell was coming from and it smelled moldy. I removed it and the smell seemed to dissipate the day after and I hope the smell in the closet goes away, or else I am going to need to act on the other member's suggestions that are a bit more involving.

Is there an A/C near there? Our AC's both smelled musty until we cleaned them. We found a post that advised us to leave the fan running after the compressor cuts off to dry out the AC before we turn it off.
Could it be the gray tank smell coming up thru the shower drain?
Very good trouble shooting ideas! Maybe the traps went dry.

  • I would start out by placing a dehumidifier in the room with all storage doors open. The dehumifier should have a continuous drain so it never turns off by getting full.

Sometimes after the area is kept very dry for a long time, the musty odor won't return.

As you know, if it is a true leak that goes unattended, your troubles will get bad enough to figure out where the breach is. But I would investgate that while the rig is drying up inside.

Quite often, leaks enter in through the marker lights. I would unscrew them off the rig and caulk where the wires pass through the wall. The marker light gaskets are not reliable over the long run.

Is it just damp spring air/humidity? Maybe just putting some DampRid type water collectors in the camper might help.
  • Is it at all possible that someone put wet towels or clothes or paper in the closet that has since dried? Even if the object is no longer there the smell can remain for weeks or more in a closed closet.
  • Look at at the upper part of the walls where the roof meets, condensation can create mold on the walls, if it is a slide out, pull the slide in half way or more and look at the inside of the lip and where the lip hides the outer wall.

Also check inside cabinets again along the upper corners of the walls, the way that rv's are asembled there is a small void where the roof and the walls meet with no insulation to speak off, this added to outside damp wetaher and the heater inside and you have condensation at the place where hot air comes in contact with cold air, remember the glass with ice cubes and your favorite drik, you get conesation on the outside.

Hope that you can find the mold, I can not smell it but I do encounter it specially in winter, there is as product that we use from Zep it takes care of the mold, Home Despot carries it, blue bottle.
