Smog question, maybe a stupid question..

If I buy a class C out of state and bring it back into California, will I have to have it smogged to ca requirements? Or are the newer class C rvs compliant?
I just remember years ago I bought a car from out if Calif. and went to register it and had to have it brought up to current requirements. It was a pita.
Thanks
Steve
  • If you buy a new vehicle, and have the license for California, then you will not need to smog it.

I bought a 2007 Ford Edge and normally it is not smogged for 4 years. I had it in Oregon and lived here at the time. When I moved to California, it was about 2 years old, and I had to find a smog station that took my style of vehicle, that the new smog equipment plugs into the OPDII port and controls the throttle electronically during the test. It passed with only 6 PPM hydrocarbons, the limit was 100 or something.

So if the vehicle is brand new, probably will not need to smog it at all. If used, then when you get to California, you will need to smog it. However the need to bring it up to 'standards' like my 85 RV took, that is no longer required, as all 50 states meet the CA requirements today.

If you are attempting to avoid state sales tax, well California will collect the county sales tax rate for the county that you own property in, or live in, unless you bought the RV over 18 months earlier, and are bringing it into the State of California for the very first time. They also ask questions that might be difficult to answer, like have you been employed in California, and what day did you start working in CA. Do you own any property in CA, when did you buy it? If you have been a resident for all this time, they will not allow you to avoid paying sales tax, unless you might be buying this from a relative, or got it in a will.

    Good luck!

    Fred.
  • Purchased mine in Minnesota and YES it was required to have a smog certificate before being registered in California. The chassis is an 08 Ford, the coach is an 09. California decided to change the year of my coach to an 08. Federal law states that "the finisher of a partial build determines the year of the vehicle" wasn't a big problem just more paperwork. When I transferred vehicles from NY to Ca. registration, the smog devices on my vehicles had to be accepted as is even though they were not as strict as Ca. standards. I think now all vehicles are the same but not back then.
  • Thanks for your input. I was told by sales guy that all comply now, but I'm always skeptical about what sales folks say. I figure they will say just about anything to get a sale. Especially to an out of state guy..I do assume to have Ca. DMV certs., for registration. I just don't want to have to add components to the engine to make it comply.
  • Just ask the sales guy to send you a photo of the emissions sticker that's under the hood. The sticker will tell you if the vehicle is California compliant. If the vehicle has less than 7500 miles on it, it will have to be California compliant.

Sorry, I couldn't get this to be hypertext.
  • Just did this last Friday...YES, you are required to have it smogged. With registration it will be smoged and electronically sent to CA DMV almost instantly. I smogged it Friday at 2:45pm, finished with smog at 3:20, drove across street to DMV, and by 4:45pm I was all done! New CA registration and new plates with tags.
  • I just received my DMV renewal and the coach needs to have a smog inspection again. So most likely the technician will type in the year of the vehicle chassis and the registration says differently so here we go again with the California DMV incompetency dance. Ca. requires a smog inspection every two years. When they smog my diesel pick-up one tech revs the engine and one tech watches the tail-pipe. Excellent diagnosis. I swear it looked like Al Gore.
