Spare tire class A motorhome

Our 2001 Brave came with a mounted 19.5 spare as did our previous Itasca Wind Cruiser. I changed tires twice on the road with the Itasca, never had to yet on the Brave but I like having a spare even if I couldn't change the tire myself.

There is no way my wife could handle a spare tire. We carry an unmounted spare in a compartment but we could not get the 22.5" wheels loose anyhow. The mounted spare weighs around 150# and takes 450# of torque to take on and off.

Luckily our MY2000 HR came with a spare 19.5 tire and rim. It is in the lower part of the basement compartment that also houses the propane tank. The current spare has never been on the road and is about 8 years old.

Not true, get a spare tire, wheel optional, if you travel on weekends, holidays, nights etch, and you have a flat you will be really happy you had it. Having had 3 flats in my rving life I speak from some experience, had a flat on I 95 in Florida on mothers day, called road service, first question. Do you have a spare? When service guy showed up I asked him if I didn't have a spare what were my consequences. He said it has been a busy weekend and they were sold out of tires in my size. Should get some in by Tuesday or Wednesday. Then I questioned prices, 25% more than I paid for the spare I was carrying.

I can see that. Ours is up on a ledge in one of the compartments and pretty much in the middle of the coach. I could pull it out with a strap that is wrapped around it but it would be quite the wrestling match to get it back in there and ours are only 19.5".

We've full-timed in our 2004 for 10 years with no spare - even driving to Alaska. We are very conscientous about keeping our tires in excellent condition - replacing before they 'really' need it, and keeping them properly inflated. Being full-time we carry everything we own so don't have the room for a spare. Also, we wouldn't have the strength to handle it. Granted, we could need a tire someday but we have roadside insurance. We just don't worry about it. If we'd have to wait a day or two for a tire we'd be happy boondocking and waiting!

In answer to the original question...no, it's not unusual to not get a spare with your motorhome.

We carry a tire as it can be difficult getting 22.5 tires on short notice. The tire I carry is not mounted. You can usually find a tire place to send someone that can mount the tire but can't always find the tire to start with.

We tow our Sport Trac for this reason and others, # 1 being screwed by a dispatched service provider in 2007. I built a platform in the bed with the unmounted spare under it along with my extra draw bars (for it's hitch), jump start and a toolbox. Inside the spare is my 75' 3/4" macerator hose and an extra 30' 50 amp cord. On top of the platform is a Weber Baby Q, 10# propane cylinder, umbrellas, portable sat dish with mount and some extra space. This is all under a color matching Century cap.

What do you use to break the lug loose?

Breaker bar, about 2 1/2 foot long and black steel deep sockets, I also carry a backup 3 ton floor jack just in case I am in a difficult area and the rv jacks could be a issue..
