Spartan dashboard engine gauges question

On the round Spartan gauges, right below the needle shaft, there is a small red light. Among other things, this light begins to blink on 4 gauges when I try to start the engine. The problem seems to be that the starter does not get any current. It makes me suspect that a safety feature (one that prevents engine start) is preventing the starter from working. Perhaps a hydraulic leveler not retracting completely? Right now, I would like to know if these bling lights are a clue to where the problem might be. Thanks
  • The little red lights are warning lights for the gauge they are in.
Have a cummins service tech, pull the codes for the engine, they will tell you what is preventing the start.

    OR

Disconnect the chassis battery, wait 15 minutes and reconnect. see if it will start.
  • Tom/Barb,
I had already assumed that blinking red lights probably was a warning. And, this feature would be very useful whenever I'm driving down the highway. However, in this case, the voltmeter, oil pressure, water temp, and trans fluid temp gauges are all blinking their red lights. Therefore, I'm more directed towards your suggestion regarding the codes for the engine. I'm going to disconnect the chassis batteries completely(all cables) and wait about 20 minutes before reconnecting, and attempting to start the engine. Right now, having a technician come out to take a reading is not an option. I will have to drive the rig to Cummins. I'll report later. Thanks
  • Tom/Barb,
Thank you, thank you. I was able to return to "square one" on diagnosing the overcharging alternator problem, by following your instructions on how to try disconnecting the chassis battery, etc. All the dashboard lights returned to normal, the engine started, everything fine except for my original alternator problem (showing constant 15 volt charge rate).
I will treasure this "nugget" of information that you gave me. NONE of my Spartan, nor Newmar manuals had any of this information. Not even anything about the little red warning light in every round gauge. This info will make me feel a lot more secure regarding getting stranded somewhere,....which has never happened with this Dutch Star. Thanks again.

I was having problems getting started and removed all my batteries to test, clean and charge them. After reinstalling I found the codes kept in my ECM were gone. ( I have a "road Tech" computer on board) I asked Cummins about this and their answer was the ECM must have power to retain the trouble shooting codes.
So, when the batteries are removed the ECM forgets the code that is preventing the computer to allow the start.

The problem will return if not corrected, and the computer will also forget the codes that know how you drive, and will start the 1500 mile cycle to reinstall the drive codes.
