Stealth campers

Is stealth camping a thing of the past? I've heard that cops are so on top of it that its nearly impossible to do it full time.
Do you or anyone you know do this on a regular basis? (Please only speak from experience or once removed.)

  • For a fee you can dump at most CGs even if you're not staying there.
  • Most fairgrounds have dump stations... The one here charges $2 to dump. Or you could pull a Cousin Eddie(JK!)

Not everyone showers every day. And, I "sponge bathe" which uses very little water. There is even dry hair cleaners.
  • Where do you dump if you avoid campgrounds? Daily showers for two would require frequent dumping.

Stealth camping is primarily (to me) sleeping for free in a spot that is not a designated RV place. Periodically we visit our son in La Crosse, WI and park in front of his house on this busy street and we sleep in the B. So far, we've never been rousted.

Our next B will be more "stealth." There will be no graphics and outward signs of utilities other than the electrical connection. With the continuous smoke dark windows and an, uncommon for a B, graphite grey metallic finish it will look more like a passenger van.
Strange van with blacked out windows lurking in my neighborhood will immediately be getting a visit from the police. It screams "Buffalo Bob" from The Silence of the Lambs.
  • Cheaprvliving.com . Is the place to find out about this subject.

  • While we are new at this our goal has been to avoid campgrounds most of the time and we have had great success. We have only been rousted once by a very nice LEO who directed us to a more suitable spot(just across the town line).

It seems from reading that it varies greatly from state to state as well as town to town. We have stayed in rest areas/truck stops, as well as 24 hour McDonalds and Burger Kings.
  • I have no experience with stealth camping.
Where are you hearing about the cops being so on top of it?

I have read that in San Diego, CA the law against camping on the street is being strictly enforced.

And, I'm sure many 'tourist' type locations like ocean front communities strictly enforce it, at least during the peak season.

Other than that I have heard or read nothing about enforcing laws on stealth camping.

Please, let us know where you are hearing this, maybe boondocking will be next on the enforcement list.
