I'd go easy on that aluminum screening. I did the same thing to all of my vents and found that it restricted the flow just enough to cause a serious heat issue. It was the screen on my water heater that caused extra heat to build up at the exhaust. It melted the area just above the water heater. I only noticed it when my young daughter leaned up against it and got burned. Her burn marks matched the pattern of the screen. Yes, I felt like a crappy dad:( and, yes, I removed the screening at once.
With that said: they do sell screened inserts for various rv components. The screen area on those inserts seem to be more spread out and would probably vent better and cooler.
