Stowaway 2 Swing Away Storage Box

I wanted to put all my stray gear in an outside box, so that the interior storage in my Travato could be used for bikes and a kayak.

I got it yesterday and assembled it. Basically it fits all my gear. I put two bins inside to separate my plumbing items from electrical. In the gaps, I put my folding chairs, tables and some sundry items. On top I put my grill table, outside mat, lantern, and lantern post.

  • Hi,

Nice addition. I have one similar that we got about 12 years ago for a Class B. I have kept it to store camping stuff in it and now am wondering about using it. The only problem is it will have to be loaded out in the street as our driveway is up a hill to the house and RV pad in the back, and the cargo box will bottom out from the driveway to the street.
  • No, the passenger side door does not swing out 90 degrees - more like 75 to 80. To me that doesn't really matter, as the bathroom blocks that door - you only need to open it to open the driver's side door. It could be held open with a bungee if needed.

I seriously doubt I'd remove it while on the road. It would be very heavy with gear in it - at least too heavy for me to want to remove and then later try and reinstall. I suppose if you wanted to use it to haul stuff you would completely unload, then I guess that would be do-able.
  • The wheel package is a wise thing. When at a CG, it might be useful as a way to mark your spot while you are gone, especially if tied down somehow via a steel cable.

As for the hitch lock, I'd probably point to Bolt Locks (it keys to the Travato's door/ignition key), so you have one less key to worry about.

Does it swing out enough so you can open the van door to at least 90 degrees?
  • It's a snug fit and difficult to align with the hitch pin singlehanded. Of course, impossible loaded with stuff.

I imagine easier with 2 people. I did get the wheel package to make it easier to move around the shop if I choose to disconnect it.

But I don't see that happening. There really is no reason to take it off.
  • I like how it can slide out of the way, but still remain attached securely to the van. For something as relatively small as the Travato, a hitch mounted cargo carrier (preferably one that is encloded and lockable) is a must for bulkier items.

Any problems getting it onto the hitch receiver?
