Texas CDL question ...Again

Ok, YES I have searched, read, and searched some more. I have tried to find definitive info on the Texas DPS website. There is conflicting info regarding the legal requirement for a Class B license in TX for RV's over 26,000 GVR. The only document I was able to find is Chapter 522 of the Transportation Code.

http://www.statutes.legis.state.tx.us/Docs/TN/htm/TN.522.htm

This is what it states regarding RV's. I have deleted non pertinent areas of the document to shorten the copy:

Now, according to this document, motor homes are exempt from the license requirement. So, understanding that if I contact the DPS office, I may or may not find someone familiar with the law, I have not done so yet.

So, does anyone have definitive official documentation as to the requirement of a special license for an RV in the state of TX?

Thanks,
Bruce
  • Thanks for all the info posted. The code posted by BB_TX definitely clarified it for me. I did not see that code during my search. Well done BB_TX. Thanks also to those who confirmed it.
  • Yes you are right and need a class B. Foretravel and motor homes of Texas will drive you over to get it if you buy from them so you have a licensed driver. I have heard Livingston is good and understands as does Nacogdoches.
  • You Do need a Class B if over 26,000 lbs. Try NOT to take the tests in Corpus Christi. In CC, DPS examiners require you to parrallel park, backing around an imaginary vehicle into a spot not defined by any serious markings, but rather where they tell you. They then just watch. If your imagination does not match theirs, you may not pass, and don't DARE hit the curb ! Just avoid Corpus Christi for these tests.
