Thanks to all you DP Pushers!!

All,

Just wanted to pass on a thanks to all of you pro-diesel posters. I have spent months reading everything I could on the pros and cons of a gasser versus a DP. I finally decided to spend a bit more and got a 34 foot 2007 Winnebago Journey with the 350 Cat.

We picked it up near Las Vegas and drove it back to Colorado this week. We took our time and took 4 days. I am so impressed with the ride and handling. Everything you all said about diesels became so apparent: quiet, smooth, handling, torque, etc. Most times you can't hear it back there doing its job. We faced a lot of wind from all directions (except behind us of course) and I never felt like I had to fight it. Only when there were gusts or when you would pass a bridge or something blocking the wind and the coach would drift to the side from the quick lack of side force. Passing head-on semis were a non-issue, no movement at all. Going up the ten miles Wolf Creek Pass I didn't ever lack power, I could accelerate at any time if I wanted to (which I did do now and then just because I was so impressed that a vehicle that size could accelerate so easily going up hill)! Going down the other side wasn't an issue either, exhaust brake and tapping the brakes every now and then did the job. Granted we were pretty light, but it sure was fun to drive.

Thanks for all the great insight and advice!!

  • Congrats and welcome to the "club"... As we say, once you drive one you'll never go back!!
  • Congratulations on your new rig, may it be a joy for many years to come.

The other thing you are going to love has to do with altitude. Being turbocharged, you will have the same power available at 11,000 feet crossing the Rockies that you do at sea level, none of this gasping for breath stuff due to the thin air.

(At that altitude, normally aspirated engines are down about 20% in power -- and that 20% is off the top, it takes the same amount of power to run the alternator and all the other losses before it gets to the wheels.)
  • I can relate to that. We were looking at a diesel class C and was somewhat impressed compared to our TT but not overwhelmed. Than we looked at a Beaver DP....one drive and within 36 hours out came the checkbook.
  • "THEY" say never test drive a diesel unless you have your checkbook...now you know why.....:B...enjoy your new (to you) rig......Dennis
