You probably felt cramped because the slide was in your way and the floor plan was designed to be used with the slide open.
You can't compare an RV with the slides in to an RV designed without slides. Two different animals with two different end results.
Having owned several RVs with slides in the past, I know firsthand how interiors are impacted with the slides in, they are not very usable.
Now, I have a small Class C without slides and the interior is snug but completely usable since it was designed to be used without a slide.
