That isn't necessarily true. I routinely camp in remote areas with no cell service. If I can't fix it myself, I have to hope someone comes along who can. And if I can get a hold of someone to come out, they are likely to charge me a significant amount for the 3+ hour round trip.
Now, this does not prevent me from having a slide or anything else. But, it does convince me I should know how to fix certain things - and those are the things that would prevent me from getting home or out of the forest. If the fridge door falls off, I can work around it. If the slide won't go in, I have to get it in.
I simply don't have a slide because I don't feel any need for one.
Well stated!
Your camping style ... and thoughts on a slide being just another thing to malfunction out where there may be only marginal availability of help ... pretty much mirrors the way I think about Rv'ing.
We like to be able to RV camp anywhere at any time, and as such I must be able to repair a lot of things on the rig. A slide would just plain be another thing for us to have along that might possibly disrupt a trip in a bad location. We even now carry an Iridium system based satellite access device for both everyday texting and emergency help where there is no cellular service.
Also, a slide reduces the effectiveness of on board air conditioning, heating, and ventilation when caught camping in unexpected extreme weather conditions.
