Thinking about changing class A's

To begin with I might say I'll never see 80 again and thinking about doing something I may have thought foolish a few years ago. My 2003 National Tradewinds has had a streak of bad luck over the past couple years. This time when it comes out of the shop I'm gonna look for a Newmar Canyon Star to replace it. Some may think at my age that is foolish but I have only one life to live and I want to enjoy it. We use our motor home often and I want to do so without the worry of major problems. The Tradewinds is 15 years old and still beautiful, been babied and kept under cover for life, everyone says she looks like new. We may never have another problem but to tell the truth I just want a new one.:W

  • Go for it. You don't know what life will hand you tomorrow.
  • Absolutely! Buy it, finance it for as long as they'll let you and insure the loan - then go enjoy yourself.

Based on our experience I'd say Newmar was a good choice too.

A friend that last year had the same DP as mine came in last week with a almost new KingAire...beautiful rig. MM, do not faint, got me to looking at newer big Monaco's and the only model without a window at the head of the bed (one of the few things we do not like about our Dynasty) are Signateres. They have more glitz than what we like but they come with everything you could want except hooks to hang things on, extra towel bars, covers over the roof vents, extra house batteries, a large solar bank, a full wardrobe across the back, LED lights and TVs, a trailer brake controller, windows where half the window opens, and some with the terrible NoCold 1200 refer.

OP, I decided why would I go from a good known that is setup like we like to an unknown that would require many changes??? The hassle of changing rigs, the $15K in sales tax, the tripling of insurance cost, selling my rig (dealer only allowing $50K on trade) I think you know what we have decided at our age.

MM, old dogs and even a newer rig is not going to happen...mainly to much hassle for not enough gain.
  • I'll have to go with Doxie on this. I see it all the time at the RV shop. People come in with brand new units that need something fixed that wasn't done right at the factory. The dealer can't get them in for weeks because they're too busy fixing the units sold last moth and the new coach owner is leaving next week for Florida, with non-cancelable reservations all down the east coast. They end up paying us to fix their coach and negotiating with the dealer to reimburse them.

And lest you think the it won't happen to a Newmar, we had one in last month, along with Tiffins that they couldn't get back to Red Bay and even Arlo Guthrie's Newell Bus.

And they all say the same thing - "We bought new because we didn't want to deal with someone else's problems". There have been several threads recently about how low the quality of the new rigs is. With everyone and his brother buying coaches, the manufacturers are just blowing them out the door.

You have a good coach that you love. You know how it was maintained. The only reason I'd consider buying another is to downsize because it will be easier for you to keep going on a smaller rig.
  • 30 years ago I knew this old couple and when they died, they're cabinets were empty, except for Cornflakes. They left over 400K in the bank. I'd spend it. Buy two!
  • It’s your money. You earned it and saved it. Buy a new MH of your choice tomorrow!

Don, I say go for it!

My Uncle was very conservative, he lived a very simple life. At 85, he found out he had cancer and it took him quickly. His estate made us all very comfortable.

I would rather he had enjoyed the money himself but maybe he did in his own way. Saving was his passion since he grew up during the depression (he would be 91 now if living).

If buying that new Newmar will not effect your retirement, I don't see why you shouldn't enjoy a new motorhome.

    Safe travels,
    MM.

Thank you, my feelings as well as my kids feelings.

  • No reason not to do what you want, but remember that most new ones have a list of problems that will have to be dealt with usually within the first year. You may have to put repair time into a new one before it is problem free for awhile.
