Tiffin FRED chassis doghouse cover

So I'm gathering all the materials to insulate the doghouse on my Tiffin FRED chassis. I go out to take a look at how to pull the thing apart, and I realize I have never had it apart!

And I don't see any easy way that it comes apart! I started pulling up corners of the carpet and realized I was pulling out some staples that were holding the carpet down. I doubt I should have to pull staples to get access to the engine.

I figured I must be doing something wrong. Any FRED chassis owners out there able to tell me how to get the doghouse cover off?

Thanks.
  • There could be large screws in the corners of the cover. If they are steel screws you can run a magnet all along the hatch cover and locate the screws, they are usually put right through the carpet and are hard to find. if the magnet doesn't find them, try tapping all around the top with a metal object and listening for a metallic sound when you find the screws
  • I called Tiffin. They said they used screws, no latches. I can't find any screw. I will have to get a magnet and see what I can find.
  • My Dutch Star gasser gave me a fit trying to remove it. It has a couple screw latches but when it was installed, some of the carpet glue was still wet and the cover glued itself in place. Took a trip to the dealer to remove it and that took well over an hour.
  • You'll find some screws in the carpeting around the bottom of the doghouse. The heads are buried in the carpeting so it'll take some probing.

Any idea how many or where to look? I found two on the vertical side. Not sure if there are more or not. Just went and bought some magnets to try and find buried screws.

This should not be so difficult!
  • I "think" there are four but its been a while since I've been in a FRED so don't quote me on that just in case there are more.
  • I found 4. Way messed up. The heads were sunk BELOW the carpet. The only way to find them and get them out was to cut up the carpet. I was kind of planning to redo the carpet. Then I changed my mind. Now I have no choice.

Just wondering what a repair facility would have done if the needed access to the engine????
  • Well, if you're going to re-do the carper, do yourself and the next owner a favor and install 4 of these.

I wish it was that easy. The direction it needs to be held is down. As in screwed down to the floor.
  • Wow. What a project finally done. Ended up recarpeting the bulkhead, the dog house, the engine cover, and the front carpet. Added thick insulation and sound proofing everywhere.

I don't know if I should be impressed or disappointed in how the motorhome was put together. It seemed very custom. If something did not fit, or was not right, Tiffin fabricated a patch or a shim to make something fit. So, either this is the plan, to just make things fit "close" and then customize on the assembly line. Which their work is very impressive. Or, this motorhome was so far off that total customization was necessary just to make it right. At which point, I am not impressed!

That entire project was a huge deal. Took me most of four weekends. Not something I ever want to do again! I just hope everything is sealed, and the Front Engne Diesel is just a little quieter!
