Tire pressure

Taking delivery of a 2017 Thor Citation Sprinter and was wondering what pressure to set tires. We have previously owned class a's and pressure was dictated by loaded weight at a weight scale. Do we just go by weight limits on the sidewall of tires.

  • Nathan....just a thought.

Sprinters have OEM short style valve stems on the duals. Very difficult to check and adjust TPs. Look into getting "Dually Valves" extended metal stems (they have centering grommets to hold them in place. They will save you a boatload of bother.

One installed. Mark your calender to have them checked in 6 months. The gaskets compress.
  • Welcome to Sprinter ownership! Nathan.

Your Citation w/ a 3500 Sprinter chassis has a GVWR of 11,030 lbs.

Do not use the MAX PSI on the tire!

There is a placard on the driver's door sill giving the recommended TP (F & R) for your GVWR. Almost 100% guaranteed it is 61 PSI F & R ...as are 99.999999% of 3500 Sprinters.

Use the placard setting. Its the highest you want/need to go.

Keep it simple. When your RV is "mission ready" - full fuel, full propane, 2/3 FW, full HWH, nearly empty waste tanks, food, clothes, comfort items, crew, pups, beer and crisps...) weigh it. Just get an over all weight and don't bother with the front, rear, starboard, port individual tire weights hoorahh.. Just get an honest all up weight.

Without being too complicated...Sprinters rely on tire sidewall flex to give you a smooth ride. 61 PSI is fine for max GVWR. You can do a Lb or 3 less if you are under that. All up my 14 View Profile weighs about 10300ish. I use 58-61.
  • You won't damage the tires using the sidewall pressure but the ride will be pretty harsh. Coach mfg. pressure is best. May I suggest you get a remote pressure monitor. Dual tires are hard to visually see if they are low. Many trips have been ruined by an inner tire going flat and not get noticed until it blows. Way cheaper to get a tire fixed because you saw it going low on the monitor than to buy a new one and fix any damaged caused by the flat.
  • No different than what you did for your previous unit. Don't over think it. Use the suggested pressure from the RV manufacturer or the tire manufacturer based on axle weight ratings if you don't want to bother getting it weighed.
  • Best bet is to do the same as you did with the A and set the pressure based on loaded weight.
  • Do not inflate tires to the pressure indicated on the sidewall, that is the maximum pressure that the tires can be inflated to and in most instances is higher than what is recommended by the motorhome manufacturer. There should be an emblem on the door panel showing the recommended tire pressure for front and rear tires based on design cargo loading.
