Toad Recommendations Appreciated

RE: 2000 Winnebago Minnie Winnie DL

Looking for a toad for Winnie...am thinking something around the year 2000...don't need a lot of bells and whistles with the toad...just solid mechanical...what vehicles around that year have long lives...assuming proper care by their owner(s).

All input appreciated.

  • Again if manual OK, Ford Focus. Light weight, tows 4 wheels down.
  • 1997 GEO Tracker 4 W/D 60,000 miles and half of those were 4 wheel down. Great little unit.:D Dont even know it's back there. I tow it with a 2001 Jayco Eagle 28' V10. Good luck:)
  • Any year Honda Civic 5 Speed Standard Transmission, 4 down, tow bar available from Roadmaster. To date we have towed a 1990 Accord, a 2001 Civic and we are now on a 2007 Civic. In all cases the Honda Manual reads not to tow 4 down ("because we want to sell you a CRV instead.") :)

As long as you can drive a standard transmission, any standard transmission Subaru can be towed 4 down. No automatic transmission Subaru can be towed except on a trailer, not even a tow dolly.

    The Subaru is easy.
    1. release parking brake
    2. put transmission in neutral
    3. turn key 1 click to unlock steering

and GO! No fuses to pull, no pre or mid towing procedure to go through to lube transmission. No distance restriction. No speed restriction.

As a bonus, it is 4 wheel drive for those out of the way places you may want to visit.

I'm on my first Subaru, but all of my toads from now on will be Subarus.
  • I'm happy with the Honda CR-V we tow. It's been a perfectly reliable daily driver.
  • I tow a 2003 VW Jetta standard, with Diesel engine. It has 330,000 miles and runs great - it is an everyday car to work and back. It works great, and whether gas or diesel, around that year should be relatively inexpensive.
