Toliet not holding water

I always leave a couple of inches of water in the toilet after flushing. But noticed today that after about an hour it had drained out. Took my toilet brush and cleaned the edge of the flapper and the seal. Is there something I can put on the seal to make it work? I like the water in the bowl to help keep down odor!

  • If you're looking for a quick and temporary fix clean the seal and the spray it with PAM cooking spray.

I had the same problem a few years ago and someone mentioned it here and it worked until I could do a good cleaning.
  • Joe,

You didn't tell us anything about the pot. When I worked in Thetford R&D, we occasionally had trouble with things getting screwed up by something called Calcium Papitate (memory working hard here). The thing I remembered about it when our Aquamagic started leaking was the muriatic acid cleaned it up real quickly (just stay clear of the fumes).
So, CLR might be a good start, but had to tear the valve open and clean the parts outside.

Replaced my seal 2x now on my Thetford Aqau magic II and it still won't hold water. Next step, a better toilet.
  • I just replaced the flapper seal on my Thetford and it was surprisingly easy. Ordered the part from Amazon and it came with instructions. If you go this route, be advised that the seal package comes with two parts: One is the flapper seal itself and the other is the gasket that goes between the base of the toilet and the floor. Once you have the toilet out you might as well replace both. My installation took about ten minutes and has been working perfectly ever since.
  • We had to buy a new Thedford Toilel because they don't offer a replacement seal kit for the old one we had. It finaly quit after 12 years.
  • I got real aggressive with mine on the Pace Arrow. I used a bent wire hanger to get all of the old paper out of the groove. That eliminated the water leaking out. Everytime you catch a little paper on the slider it adds just a little more in the slot and needs to be removed. I have Sea-Land now and don't have that problem.
  • Once a year I clean mine with ,,green scrub pad, small plastic scraper and in the end my fingernails. Then coat with dielectric grease.
  • Next step..get something like an expired credit card and work it around the rubber seal. Probably a little paper or seed that is caught. Don't be to aggressive by using a small putty knife or metal object. They do free themselves sometimes. Pour just a little palm oil or coconut oil just enough to cover drain might help free it also. If not successful might have to wait till whatever disintergrates or if it really bugs you pull and wipe off rubber gasket which is a hassle.
  • Try some CLR in the bowl, and see if there are deposits/lime deposits on the seal.

Otherwise, it may be time for a seal replacement.
