When your 70 y/o daughter comes over and says, "Dad, hand me the keys to your MOHO, truck, cars, tractor, ATVs, and riding lawn mower!"... you're done! It's over. It doesn't matter that your DL expired 2 years ago and you forgot to have it renewed. She's had umpteen neighbors call to say, :E"Loretta, your Dad's on the road again.":E It happened. A good man, he was a self reliant stubborn old coot living in his own paradigm. Objectivity and self awareness gets a little skewed in that realm.
My MIL is now 89. After a few close calls while hanging a left, she spent the next 3 years making right turns. Last year, she had a real minor accident just backing out of her driveway and trying to get out of the neighborhood. It scared her so bad that she parked the car and let her license expire.
Watching these family events is sad. That DL privilege we've had since age 16 represents a hefty measure of freedom and independence, the surrender of which must be a traumatic experience. While I don't relish that day for me, I hope to have the mental capacity to make and accept the right decision at the right time. And if not, hopefully one of my younguns or someone will be paying particular attention. I'd hate for anyone to be hurt due to my inability to make proper decisions.
