From your description it sounds like the Ford V-10 with a 5 speed transmission is that correct? If the constant down shifting and high rpms bother you as it does me, don't use cruise control. The constant down shifting and up shifting will wear out the transmission sooner the higher rpms won't because the engine is designed for it. I installed a vacuum gauge in mine so I know when it will down shift. I give it more gas on an approaching hill then the slowly back of the throttle as I climb preventing constant down shifting and up shifting during the climb. On long hills where I know it will down shift I manually down shift and leave it in that gear until I reach the top.
