Transmission clunk

I should clarify.

I've read all the thread about shifting a Ford to neutral before going to park to avoid a clunk, and some talk about using the parking brake.

Our Chevy has always (AFAIR) 'clanked' when going from park to drive. The sound seems like it's from the driveshaft.

The driveshaft has not ever been removed since we took new delivery in '05.

Is there a way to properly engage Drive in the Chevy and avoid this?

What about a clunk (rear U joint, I think) most times when going from park to drive?

Will shifting to nrutral then drive stop this?

Mine does it too and I thought is there a problem, good thing to know its normal.

I was taught on an automatic transmission before taking it of gear to set the emergency brake then put it in to park and to put into gear before releasing the parking brake.

Great. I just tried shifting in neutral before putting in park, and it no longer does that. I was also saved a trip this Saturday to the auto shop. Thanks.

If it happens consistently when cycling between drive and reverse it could also be u-joints.

WOW. Imagine. Thanks Bounder96 for the info. I have an 08 and have had the same noise and had the same thoughts as rockhillmanor. I even had it into Ford truck shop and they found nothing wrong(looked at it under warranty). Funny they never mentioned the neutral to park suggestion.

Go figure! And all these years I have been on pins and needles waiting for whatever makes the clunking to break. :S

Thanks everyone. I was going to take mine in to a transmission shop in the spring because of the clunk. Last MH I had was a 21' Gulfstream and no clunk.

Normal. Caused by play in longer drivelines.
