It is good to change the transmission fluid every once in a while, but not at 5,000 miles. I think most require a oil change around 25,000 or some at more than that.
Watch those water coolant filters too, and check the mileage or time limits, you might exceed the time before getting close to the mileage limit on the coolant filter. I always changed my coolant filter in September, so that my heater core would have a good water supply all winter. My coolant filter is inline with my dash heater core, and will stop working when the filter is plugged. I found this out while dry camping at North Rim of the Grand Canyon, September 97 when it was almost 1 year old. Lucky for me, I was able to find a Napa store in Albuquerque - where I enjoyed the hot air balloon fiesta for the 4th time.
