Transmission

Coach has been stored for 9 months. engine run up to temp every thirty days. We moved to a new house and when the workhorse went 6 miles the Allison burped out a bunch of fluid.
As always
Thank you for your thoughts!

you can do what? ::if you grossly overheat it::
  • You can do that if you grossly overheat it. I'd get it towed to an Allison shop.
  • Probably does not apply to your rig but my dad had a retarder on his allison and accidentally turned it on. He lost about a gallon of ATF. There was ATF everywhere.

out of the vent tube or the fill tube? either way its not a good sign at all.
it has nothing to do with running the engine once a month although that's a waste of time
Iam assuming you don't have a simple line leak? or filter?

I haven't heard of a transmission burping out fluid since my old cast iron Powerglide GM transmissions. With them there were a few causes but primarily it was because the transmission couldn't vent and it built up pressure and fluid came out the filler tube after you shut things down.

BTDT! My 63 Chevrolet Impala aluminum Powerglide did that once too when I overheated it by towing a trailer leaving a huge smokescreen. Added a quart of fluid and all was well once again.

To the OP: Running the engine up to temp once a month doesn't necessarily bring the transmission up to operating temperature or cycle the fluid through all the clutches. You have to drive it a few miles to do that. I would drive/run it up to temp again, check/add fluid if you need to and can, then, see what happens. Don't assume the worst without more serious symptoms than an occasional fluid leak. If it keeps burping fluid, or isn't shifting properly, then you may have issues.

Of course, you should always attempt to locate/repair the source of the leak before driving if you can.

Are you sure that it was not over-filled with fluid?
Did you check the two cooler lines on the passenger side going to the radiator for leaks?
