I had a similar problem this spring. I found 2 problems;
1. The tech that wired my toad connections for 12 volt charge left the ECM power wire off the terminal and it was making intermittent contact. This caused the transmission to wink out and come back until it finally fell off completely. In this case, the Allison went into default "get me home" mode. I think it picked 4th gear. The tranny temps went up starting in forth, but I got home (20 miles) ok.
2. The plugs on the bottom of the shift pad were loose.
After I re-established the 12 volt connection, I could get diags from the shift pad.
