How many others take the secondary highway rather than the interstates? We like the little towns along the way. you miss a lot on the freeways.
I only did it ONCE to know NOT to do it again in unfamiliar territory.
Took a scenic route.
BUT, after an hour decided I wanted to turn back....and could NOT.
I could not find anywhere to turn the coach around. I had to stay on that road for 'several long hours more' and even encountering a bridge not suited for my weight before I could get off that road.
Sooooo I do NOT sight see on back roads in the MH any more.
I stay up on the interstates. All back road sightseeing is strictly limited to using the toad. :C - pianotunaNomad IIII ride the "red" roads!

X2. We travel the side roads whenever possible. It's the only way to see
America. And, I want to see it before it's gone. :) - Old-BiscuitExplorer III7 yrs FT we traveled secondary/back roads as much as possible
Interstates are for getting there.
Secondary/back roads are for enjoying getting there - crassterExplorer IIIn the mountains, we take interstates as they are "developed more" and we don't like surprises on back roads. Of course in our toad we love mountain back roads. But typically yes, we like the highways less traveled in other areas.
- rgatijnet1Explorer IIIWe have a large highway map of the USA and keep track of every one of our trips. The next time we go to a destination we always try to take a different route. Some times we are well of of the secondary roads and on some questionable roads but we have always gotten to our destination.
One thing we have found out is that fuel is consistently cheaper off of the interstates and there is a lot more to see. Some of the fabulous small towns we have passed through have since become "new" destinations that we go back to when we get a chance. - 4aSongExplorerWe take the back roads whenever possible as there is so much more to see. Have done trips from west to east coast and return via back roads and recommend it if time is not an issue.
- RoyFExplorerI look for secondary roads. Here's one I can recommend. Living in Arkansas, I have to cross the plains to go to the west. i've done I-10, I-40, I-70, I-80. Last summer, I tried Nebraska state highway 2. A lonely road with really nice scenery (the sand-hill country). Hardly any RV parks, but there are some nice city-operated campgrounds along the way.

- We run the back roads most of the time. There is so much more to see and do.
Last year we went from WA to Key West and back, used the interstates for less then 500 miles. Didn't have much choice for those.
